Newsbits 1/31: Rocky, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, demos, and so on
January 30, 2007 on 11:56 pm | In Uncategorized | Comments OffIGN posted their preview of Rocky Balboa. I understand it's a PSP exclusive. Also on IGN is an article about how PSP shipments have dropped by 75%. Doesn't come as a huge surprise. But hey, PSP-Vault membership hasn't dropped, so at least something is going on... right? Free t-shirt. Whoo! Gamespot posted a first look at a game called Heatseeker. It will be going up against Ace Combat X, which is tough title to beat, so we'll see how it turns out. Downloadable demos for Syphon Filter and SOCOM are apparently coming soon. We'll post again when they come out, of course. Koei has announced the release of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8" for the PSP, and Game Watch has a truckload of info and screenshots. The game is a port of the PS2 version, and it features 711 different commands and 55 scenarios. The Romance series has always been a hit in the large scale strategy genre... I think. Apparently firmware 3.10 has been decrypted.
Japanese PSP users get 1,000+ free wireless access spots
January 30, 2007 on 11:42 pm | In Uncategorized | Comments OffWith the recently released firmware 3.10, Sony added a capability to the PSP that enables users to connect to the internet through Playstation Spots (or at least those in Japan). It seems we're just now beginning to understand the implication of such a feature, as Sony today also announced that the more than 1,000 "Playstation TV" PS3 demo units stationed throughout Japan will be converted into "Playstation Spots" in the near future. This means that there are now two kinds of Playstation Spots in Japan. The first kind is the "Sharing Type Playstation Spot," or the ones we're familiar with that distribute game demos via the PSP's Game Sharing function. The new kind are these "Access Point Type Playstation Spots," also known as "Playstation TV." These spots feature: Game demos you can download onto your Memory Stick (which won't be erased after your PSP turns off, unlike the demos distributed via Game Sharing) File downloads, such as videos, wallpapers, and audio PSP System Software updates Internet content browsing (a.k.a. web browser internet access) Online gaming for games that support Infrastructure for online play In other words, these new Playstation Spots are awesome, especially considering that they're free for everyone to use. The Playstation Spot site has a list of these new "Access Point Type Playstation Spots" that is regularly updated as the Spots are upgraded with the new functionality. For now, Sony is distributing 1 game demo (Piposaru Racer), 16 videos, and 55 wallpapers via these new Spots.
Firmware 3.10 officially released
January 30, 2007 on 10:31 am | In Uncategorized | Comments OffThe changelog: Game Support for PLAYSTATION(R) Network titles has been expanded. Network Support for the MPEG-4 AVC format has been added under [LocationFreeTM Player]. [Playstation(R) Spot] has been added to [Network]. [Conserve Memory] has been added as a feature under [Display Settings] in [Internet Browser]. Settings [Dynamic Normalizer] has been added as a feature under [Sound Settings] in [Settings]. [Wireless Hotspot] has been added under [Network Settings]. Other Revisions to strengthen security have been added. Note: Certain additions will not show depending on your PSP's region. Note 2: Do not upgrade if you wish to keep the ability to run homebrew or downgrade your PSP to a previous firmware version. Reports indicate that the update is showing on all "Network Update" features of PSPs, but of the update webpages (Japanese, North American, and European) only the Japanese has been updated thus far. I think most of the features are self-explanatory, but head inside for an explanation anyway.
Newsbits 1/29: Downgrader guide, new commercial, Lumines deal, firmware 3.10?!
January 29, 2007 on 9:35 pm | In Uncategorized | Comments OffI'm sure you've all read about the newly released 3.03 downgrader, which enables all PSP users to run the homebrew-capable 1.50, or even flash to Dark_Alex's custom firmware. For those who are a bit confused with the downgrader, or debating the risk, here's a clean guide from the Playstation forums. Sony just keeps on trying, maybe a little too hard. Their newest commercial "Pu$$y versus willow" (get your mind out of the gutter.) still has that gray look to it, but with a new batch of characters. I can't tell if they're trying to be funny (with sexual references), or they really just love attention, but it's full of 'em. Either way, it's funny enough to devote 30 seconds of your life to. PSPFanboy caught a great deal, Lumines for $20 at Best Buy. Definitely worth checking out if you're short in the pocket, or loved the first release. We're guessing it may be a bit of a leak, but it seems the Playstation Korea site already shows a firmware 3.10 update. According to the page, the update includes LocationFree recording, music normalization, and a "memory economy" feature for the browser. We'll certainly give word when it's released in other areas, should officially release January 30th (Korea being 14 hours ahead). Update: Or you could just download it from us, though keep in mind it's the "Korean version" so might screw up your PSP somehow. Or not. Something to keep in mind, updating will likely wipe out your ability to downgrade. On the other hand, Dark_Alex could still have the ability to update his custom firmware, so you can keep all homebrew while trying out the newest features.
