Development News: Phoenix Game Engine (PGE)

September 30, 2008 on 5:30 pm | In Uncategorized | Comments Off

About a year or so ago the new maintainer of the PSP LUA Player, InsertWittyName, started working on a new game engine for the PSP called Phoenix Game Engine, or PGE for short. PGE is a PSP specific hardware accelerated engine that assists in the creation of homebrew, specifically games. PGE was released about a month ago, however, I just recently added a thread about PGE in the Development section of our forums. PGE currently is only supported using the programming language known as LUA, however a C/C++ API is planned for release in the future. With this new addition to the Development forum I hope to post new tutorials specifically for PGE and show you how to use PGE in a game. If you have any suggestions for tutorials please feel free to post your suggestions. Current PGE Release Introduction to PGE LUA [Via PGE LUA Site]

Could Sony be preparing firmware 5.00?

September 30, 2008 on 5:04 pm | In Uncategorized | Comments Off

While the news has been slow, Sony surely hasn't forgotten about the PSP. As we wait for the PSP-3000 model to launch next month, we have to wonder what Sony has in store for the next firmware update. French PSP site PSP-Generation claims to have gotten their hands on an official beta version of firmware 5.00, one that might be released for developers, and spills all the secrets. We'd typically take these sorts of reports as the pish-posh they typically are, but with the lack of updates coming from Sony, it's all relevant. Here's what PSP-Generation says about their "5.00 beta" firmware: Basic support for the PSN Store, which may include Playstation Store downloads, a friends list, and future trophy support An improved RSS reader, with scrolling text support Screenshot functionality, for in-game use, and other areas of the XMB We're going to go ahead and keep this under the rumor category for now. PSP-Generation has had their fair share of hits and misses, with the most notable hit being the "unbricker battery" (later Pandora's Battery), as well as a PSP2 report, claiming stronger copyright protection (which may relate to the PSP-3000). No word from Sony on when we might expect the next firmware update, but with the PSP-3000 ("PSP Brite") coming in just a few weeks, the timing would be beautiful.

Because of the lack of staff around PSP-Vault, I on behave of PSP-Vault appologize about the lack of news. Anyways, on October the 15th, 2008 there will be a new PSP sold in Europe, Middle East, Austraila and New Zealand which will be called the PSP-3000 . This new unit is the next upgrade from the slim and lite console which now will be sold as the "basic" unit. (Which means PSP-Phat will only be available in trade-in store or online.) The new unit's new features are; an improved screen for a sharper image and less light reflective, so when it's sunny and your walking about with your PSP the light won't hit it...as much. The other main feature is quite handy for you Skype and Go!Messenger users out there and it is a built in microphone. The new console will be sold in various bundles. They are :Buzz!: Master Quiz, FIFA '09 and Harry Potter. Since the release of the slim and lite one year ago the console has sold over 13.4 million units in PAL areas. So just imagine what the numbers will be like with this little beauty. Want more info?
